Here are the different routes to a full licence.
You will need to have passed your CBT (unless you have already passed a lower category test) and a motorcycle theory test. You then need to practice and pass the 2 Government practical tests Mod 1 the off road handling skills test, and the Mod 2 on road ride test.
These both need to be taken on a machine which complies to the licence category you require. You may then ditch the L-Plates, carry a passenger, tow a trailer, ride outside the UK and except for a 50cc moped use a motorway.
“AM” Moped licence 50cc or less. Age 16 years or over.
Test machine 50cc below 4KW
Taking the full mod 1 & mod 2 tests on such a machine will give you a licence to ride machines of this category, this will mean no L-plates needed, passengers allowed, still no motorways as a 50cc is too underpowered.
“A1” Light licence. Ages 17 years and over
Test machine 120cc -125cc 15KW
Taking the full mod 1 & mod 2 tests on such a machine will give you a full licence to ride machines of this category, this will mean no L-plates needed, passengers and motorways allowed.
“A2” Medium licence machines up to 35KW/46BHP. Age 19 years and over
Test machine min 245cc 20KW/26bhp – 35KW/46.6BHP
There is no upper engine size limit but:
The power to weight ratio must not exceed 0.2KW/KG
It must not be derived from a motorcycle of more than double its power.
Passing your A2 tests will allow you to ride a machine of this restriction.
You would use our A2 compliant bikes for this licence.
“A” DAS Direct access, Full power unrestricted licence.
Age 24 years plus or 21 years if you have held an A2 licence for 2 years
Test machine min 595cc 40KW/54bhp from 31 Dec 2018 changes to 50kw/68bhp
Passing DAS allows any size or power motorcycle.
You would use one of our 650cc full power bike for this licence
