What are the different full licence categories?
You can choose from 3 categories of full licence – A1, A2 and A (Unrestricted, DAS).
A1 Licence
This is for students who wish to remain on a 125cc motorcycle or scooter without having to renew their CBT every two years.
The A1 means you can take the L plates off, ride on motorways and carry a pillion passenger.
Students usually learn on one of our manual Honda CB125 motorcycles or automatic Piaggio Liberty scooters.
A2 Licence
This is for students aged 19 and above who want to ride a larger bike – this is restricted to 47bhp. We use Honda Hornet 500s for training. You can keep your A2 licence or upgrade to an unrestricted licence when you are 24 years old or two years after passing the A2 licence, whichever comes first.
Unrestricted A Licence (DAS)
This is for students over 24 (or anyone who has held their A2 Licence for a minimum of two years). We use Honda Hornet 750s for training.
You can ride bikes of any size or power once you have achieved this licence – the choice is yours!
We ask all full licence candidates to attend a free 30-minute off-road assessment to establish your training requirements.
During the assessment we will watch you riding one of our motorcycles, usually a Honda Hornet 750 (500cc for A2 candidates / 125cc for A1)
Please note the assessment is only available at our West London training centre at Larkspur Rovers FC, Northolt, UB5 5FE.
We offer this service seven days a week at various times, advance booking is required.
If you have booked a CBT we can often do the assessment after – please get in touch for availability.
You need a valid CBT and also a motorcycle theory test (separate to a car theory test).
You can book your motorcycle theory test here, and you can practice the hazard perception element of the test here.
Please note we only offer training for the Unrestricted A Licence and A2 on manual bikes.
You need to complete two practical tests (Mod 1 and Mod 2) to gain your full licence.
If you complete your full licence on A1 or A2, you will need to do the training and tests again to upgrade to the Unrestricted A Licence.
All our tests take place at Uxbridge test centre.
If you have limited or no manual experience you may need a gear conversion course first.
This is a 3 hour one-to-one training session aimed at people who can ride an automatic but would like to learn how to ride a manual motorcycle with clutch and gears.
Often customers will do a CBT on an automatic, then book this course if they wish to progress to manual motorcycles.
Please note your automatic CBT certificate will allow you to ride automatic and manual motorcycles up to 125cc.
We will teach you how to move off, stop and change gear and by the end of the session you should be able to ride a manual motorcycle with fluency.
You will then be in a position to book a full licence course!
